Rozalla
Born Rozalla Miller on 18 March 1964 in Ndola, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), Rozalla is a Zimbabwean electronic music performer whose voice helped define the sound of early-'90s dance music.
She started young — singing in clubs and at events in Zambia, then appearing on a children's TV show at just 13. As a teenager she moved to Zimbabwe, fronting R&B cover bands before launching a solo career that produced five number-one hits on the national chart.
In 1988 she relocated to London, and by 1991 she'd become a global dance-pop phenomenon. Her single "Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)" hit number 6 on the UK Singles Chart, became a top 10 hit across Europe, and broke into the Billboard Top 40 — remaining her biggest hit to date. The follow-ups "Faith (In the Power of Love)" and "Are You Ready to Fly" reached numbers 11 and 14 on the UK charts respectively.
Her star power earned her real recognition: in May 1992 she won Best-Selling African Artist at the World Music Awards in Monaco, and that same year she opened every European show — including the UK leg — of Michael Jackson's Dangerous Tour.
She scored four more UK top 40 hits in 1994/95, including "I Love Music," the theme song for the film Carlito's Way. Decades later, her signature anthem keeps finding new life: a 1996 remix re-charted in the UK, and a 2009 Global Deejays remix hit number 7 in Australia after being used as the theme for So You Think You Can Dance. In 2024 she released a new album, Turn On the Light — proof that nearly 35 years on, Rozalla's still making music.
